Amanda Jane Harris was born in Bloom Twp, Morgan County, Ohio, in 1849, the daughter of Elisha Harris and Margaret Patterson. In 1854 her family came to Post Twp, Allamakee county, Iowa. There Jane lived out her life as a farmer's wife. She died at her farm in 1938.
James Riddle Laughlin was born in Post Twp in 1851. He was the son of John Laughlin and Mary Cuttle, Scottish immigrants who had arrived in Post Twp in 1848. Jim taught school, served as Post Twp assessor, but mainly farmed for a living. He died in 1930.
Jane and Jim were married at Castalia, Iowa, in 1872, in a joint ceremony with his sister Ella and her brother George. They became the parents of four daughters.
