James McGarry Harris was born in Morgan County, Ohio, in 1853, the son of Elisha Harris and Margaret Patterson. In 1854 his family came to Post Twp, Allamakee county, Iowa. James married Margaret Jamison in 1874 at rural Post Township and they became the parents of one living son. Jim and Margaret farmed in Post Township before retiring and moving to town in 1893. In 1900 Jim started a furniture and undertaking business in Postville. In 1907 he sold the furniture part of the business and in 1916 he sold half interest in the undertaking business to Louis Schutte. In 1919 he retired due to ill health. He died in 1930 and is buried at the Postville City Cemetery.
Margaret Jane Jamison was born near Postville, Iowa in 1857, the daughter of David Jamison and Sarah Burge. She later helped raise her niece Thelma Jamison. Margaret died from a goiter in 1930 and is buried at the Postville City Cemetery.
