The Great Stone Hotel at Lybrand

Home of the Elisha Harris Family

Elisha Harris bought the entire town of Lybrand soon after his arrival in Allamakee County, Iowa. The great stone hotel there became the family homes and the shops became storage or homes for animals. The great stone hotel was destroyed by a cyclone in the early 1880s. Fortunately, the family was in the town of Postville attending a memorial service for President Garfield when the storm occurred and no one was injured. In the 1960s it was reported that all remained of the town of Lybrand was some stone foundations.
