James Riddle Laughlin was born in a log cabin near Postville, Iowa, on September 25, 1851. He later lived on land in Post Twp. that he inherited from his father. He married Amanda Jane Harris of Post Twp. on May 4, 1872. She was the daughter of Elisha Harris and Margaret Patterson. Jim and Jane were married in a double ceremony with his sister Ella and Jane's brother George. Shown below is James Laughlin as a young man.

Show below is the James Laughlin home in Post Twp, a couple of miles northeast of Postville, Iowa. The farm was sold after Amanda Jane's death in 1938. The home still stands and is now owned by the Schultz family.
