Bernice Laughlin was born on the Laughlin farm near Postville, Iowa, on April 14, 1886. She married Lloyd DeWitt Walter at Des Moines on May 8, 1919. Bernice taught school at Algona, Hampton, and Des Moines, Iowa, and at Sheridan, Wyoming. Lloyd had a civil engineering degree from the University of Nebraska and serviced in the artillery aon the Alsace Front during World War I. After the war he remained in the reserves for 26 years. Lloyd's work took them to Omaha, Jefferson, and Des Moines, Iowa, and finally to Springfield, Illinoise where they lived from after March 1942. Lloyd died in 1975 and Bernice died in 1985. They are both buried at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.
