David Henry Laughlin was born in near Postville in 1861, the son of John Henry Laughlin and Mary Douglas, both children of Scottish immigrants. Around 1880 he left home to seek his fortune in the West. He was located at Jamestown, Dakota, when his heath began to fail due to consumption and Brights Disease. His father brought him home to Post Twp. several weeks before his death. He died in September 1886 and is buried in the Laughlin family plot at Minert Cemetery in rural Post Twp, Allamakee county, Iowa. He never married.
