Sara Ellen "Ella" Laughlin weas born on December 14, 1855 in Post Twp, Allamakee county, Iowa, in the log cabin her parents (John Laughlin and Jane Cuttle) had erected after arriving in Iowa. She was a young child when her father died.
On May 4, 1872 at Castalia, Iowa, she married George Wesley Harris, who lived on a neighboring farm. Ella and George were married in a double ceremony with her brother Jim and George's sister Jane.
Ella had inherited land from her father and George received adjoining land as a gift from his father Elisha Harris. There they made their home. Ella and George became the parents of six children. They were always active in the local United Brethren Church. Ella was known as a merry person who was always helping others. When her brother John's first wife died from consumption, Ella cheerfully walked across fields to bring aid to John's young family.
Ella and George are buried at Minert Cemetery in rural Post Twp, Allamakee county, Iowa. Buried with them are two sons, one who died young in an accident and one who never married.
