Elmore Atkins Laughlin was born near Postville, Iowa, on November 21, 1868, the son of John Henry Laughlin and Mary Douglas. While still a teenager, his mother died from consumption. One picture of Elmore was taken at Janesville, Wisconsin. The other was taken in St. Paul, Minnesota a short time before his death.
Elmore was a businessman in Chicago. He died from the grip and an internal hemorrhage. His sister Lillian had gone to care for him and it was thought that he had recovered sufficiently to go back to work. But then he took a sudden turn for the worse. He is buried in the Laughlin plot at Minert Cemetery in rural Postville, Iowa.
